ANTIDOTE is an exhibition of political paintings, drawings, photos and videos from MA students, Ph.D. candidates and professors at Aalto University in Helsinki, Finland. The first exhibit in what will be an annual traveling event for Aalto, ANTIDOTE explores philosophical and political contemporary issues - actively and critically. The idea of Art as a holistic form of critical thought is officially accepted in Aalto University's policy of education and research. However progressive, art education is inherently based on and challenged by notions that require even the most elemental aspects to justify themselves again and again. Pivotal and timeless questions are raised repeatedly when pondering Art: What's the point of philosophically/politically inclined work that's neither a part of "hard science / natural sciences" nor (usually) a part of economically profitable entrepreneurship either?
Through varied perspectives in the artworks of students and scholars shown together in ANTIDOTE, a dialogue is created to address topics such as gender issues, globalization / global class society, immigration, racism, ecology and consumerism.
"...The exhibition ANTIDOTE refers to and finds nourishment from many other traditions which, as I do, see art as the most flexible, versatile and comprehensive form of philosophy and politics. As a philosophical/political activity art includes both that able to be verbalized and the non-verbalizable." - Teemu Mäki, 2010
